Why pressing your hand changes how your back feels.
You do not have to believe in energy for this to make sense. Here is the plain version.
Three layers of response
1. Local
Firm pressure on a point changes what happens in the tissue directly under your thumb — blood flow, muscle tone, and the signals the local nerve endings are sending.
2. Segmental
Nerves from your hand enter the spinal cord at particular levels. Stimulating them influences how that segment of the cord handles incoming signals, including signals arriving from elsewhere in the body.
3. Whole-body
Sustained, rhythmic pressure combined with slow breathing shifts the balance of your autonomic nervous system away from alertness and towards rest. This is the part most people feel first.
An honest caveat. This is a working model, not settled science. It explains why the practice is plausible; it does not prove that it works for your condition. See the evidence page for where the research actually stands.
